Trois silences déchirés (in memoriam Pavel Haas)

Giner based this solo oboe work on the Haas suite and has worked musical spellings of the name "Haas" (B-A-A-E flat) into the music. It was written for Ferez, and it shows. In this difficult, atonal piece he is confident and convincing. His easy navigation of extended techniques is truly impressive, and he passes into and out flutter-tongued passages with remarkable fluency. The phrasing and nuances are spot on.

« K »
« Looking at the score of Bruno Giner’s K, one has the impression of mathematical mind at work, organising every event the performers will execute (even the aleatoric elements are subject to the time constrictions of the prerecorder tape). Using time-line notation and a variety of symbols, one is made aware of the detailed new musical langage that must be learnt before the players can digest the piece even for themselves. (...) The composition of the recorder parts is skilful, with uni-directional as well as argumentative moments, and clearly demonstrate Giner’s understanding of the instrument’s potential, as well as his exciting imagination. (...) Consequently the work is likely to remain one for those educated in and enthusiastic about contemporary electro-acoustic music. »
